Insite looking forward to 2007

Date: 16 November 2006

Insite, the Essex Cultural Tourism Programme, brought its 2006 programme of events to a conclusion during an exciting evening that saw celebrity Chef Mark Baumann and children from two Essex primary schools cook up something special as the launch of the inaugural Essex Food Festival.

Students from two Essex primary schools shared the prizes when they took part in the first Essex Food Challenge at Baumann’s Brasserie recently. With the help of television chef Mark Baumann two year six students from Colchester’s Birch Primary School and Ongar’s Moreton Primary School cooked dishes using only Essex ingredients. For the challenge, the pupils had to collect ingredients from various Essex producers around the county whilst award-winning photographer James Fletcher charted their progress.

It proved to be a fitting finale to a busy 2006 which also saw: a debate on ‘Essexness’ with Germaine Greer; cycle rides and walks punctuated by poetry readings by Martin Newell (Colne Valley); support for a tour of street arts (Chelmsford, Harlow, Braintree and Rochford) and Souterrain, a site specific performance which the Guardian described as ‘an evening you’ll never forget’ (Colchester).

As the year draws to a close Insite is now shaping up for an exciting programme of activity during 2007, which will include more cycle rides with Martin Newell and a special project to highlight the imminent opening of the new firstsite visual art facilities.
