Souterrain - an evening you will never forget

Date: 14 July 2006

Buildings, gardens and spaces will become the stage of a unique theatrical experience coming to Essex this summer. Souterrain is an opportunity to see the internationally acclaimed performance company Wildworks working in collaboration with local organisations and people, and is the latest project to come out of Insite, the Essex Cultural Tourism programme.

Inspired by the ancient myth of Orpheus in the Underworld, Souterrain is the heartbreaking story of a hero who refuses to let death separate him from his love. The audience literally journeys through a living set – local buildings, gardens and spaces transformed into a mysterious twilight world of strange creatures and amazing sights and sounds. Created with Essex people, the event, will take place at 7:30pm from August 3 – 13 in Colchester.

Olympic hero backs sportessex

Date: 11 October 2006

Derek Redmond, World, European and Commonwealth gold medallist has put his backing behind the drive to increase participation in sport across Essex.

The Holiday Inn, Basildon was the venue for the launch of “Building a winning future together in Essex” a strategy to take forward sports development in Essex. With just 22% of Essex residents actively participating in sport, the strategy and its action plan will seek to increase participation in the coming months and years.

Derek Redmond, one of the guest speakers at the event, gave an inspirational presentation about his sporting experiences, the most famous of which was being during the semi - finals of the 400m at Barcelona Olympics when his hamstring snapped, but undeterred he hobbled the last 250 m to the finishing line. Derek is delighted to give his support to Essex’s sporting ambitions. “Essex has a wonderful sporting pedigree in all areas of sport. It is vital to engage and inspire young people with sport at an early age and through sportessex I am sure that the County will be well placed to encourage increased participation in the coming years.”

Other guest speakers at the event included Chris Perks, Regional Director of Sport England East and Councillor Stephen Castle, Essex County Council’s Cabinet Member for Education, Sport & Thames Gateway and one of the East of England’s leading player in the London 2012 Olympic bid.

Following the conference, sportessex is now embarking on the development of a range of actions that will focus on 6 priorities:

1. Identifying, brokering and strengthening strategic links
2. Increasing quality opportunities for participation in sport and physical activity in a range of settings
3. Improving an expanding the sport and physical activity infrastructure
4. Increasing and improving workforce capacity
5. Improving the methods and effectiveness of marketing and communications
6. Providing and effective method of impact measurement

Angela Littlewood, Director of sportessex, is undaunted by the challenge ahead. “Raising the county’s participation levels is a challenge, but one that I’m sure we can meet. There was a genuine buzz and commitment at the conference and I am confident that together we can achieve great things for sport in Essex.”
