Celebrity Chef unveils Essex tourism campaign

Date: 10 July 2006

A unique poster campaign to promote Essex to rail travellers has been launched by Mark Baumann, celebrity chef and acclaimed restaurateur.

The campaign was unveiled at Colchester North Rail Station and forms part of an ongoing marketing campaign designed to promote the Real Essex.

In total, five eye-catching posters have been designed reflecting the county’s rich tourism offer and specifically its great coastline, heritage, landscapes and wonderful places to eat and drink. The posters will be displayed at a number of ONE rail stations, including London Liverpool Street throughout the Summer season.

Theo Steel, Projects Director at ONE Railway and Chairman of the Essex Development & Regeneration Agency (ExDRA), the two partners that have collaborated on this unique initiative, is confident that the campaign will make a real impact. “Essex has a fantastic product to promote to the visitor and the poster campaign will help to reinforce the message to the thousands of people passing through these rail stations. The posters are colourful, imaginative and eye-catching and I am sure that they will turn a few heads!”

Mark Baumann, who unveiled the posters at Colchester North Rail Station is equally excited about their impact. “Essex certainly does have much more to offer than meets the eye, particularly when it comes to quality places to eat and drink. I was delighted to be asked to be involved in this project and am sure the campaign will be a huge success.”

Essex school children rise to food challenge

Date: 19 September 2006

Students from two Essex primary schools shared the prizes when they took part in the first Essex Food Challenge at Baumann’s Brasserie recently.

With the help of television chef Mark Baumann two year six students from Colchester’s Birch Primary School and Ongar’s Moreton Primary School cooked dishes using only Essex ingredients in the latest project to come out of Insite – the Essex Cultural Tourism programme.

For the challenge, the pupils had to collect ingredients from various Essex producers around the county whilst award-winning photographer James Fletcher charted their progress.

‘It was great to be involved in such an exciting project which has fired the children’s imagination and got them thinking about the food they eat, and where it comes from,’ said Kate Moore, Headteacher at Birch Primary School, Colchester.

‘The project has inspired many of our oldest children to research seasonal foods and to create some mouth-watering menus. We even hope to include some of them on our own school dinner menu later in the year,’ adds Ann Bard, Headteacher at Moreton Primary School, Ongar

‘Essex is a county of real diversity especially when it comes to food. The Essex Food Challenge has been a brilliant celebration of locally obtainable and produced foods,’ said Mark Baumann.

Rob West, Director of Insite says, ‘We believe the Essex Food Challenge will further promote the county as a leading cultural destination in the East of England helping draw visitors into the county as well as letting residents know about the harvest of goodies on their own doorstep.”

James Fletcher’s photographic celebration will bring together art and food with a special booklet of his work being launched at next March’s Essex Book Festival.
