Calling all Essex sporting unsung heros
Date: 06 September 2006
BBC Essex and sportessex are calling for nominations for the Unsung Sporting Hero of Essex.
The search is part of the 2006 Essex, Southend and Thurrock Sports Awards that celebrate and show appreciation for individuals and organisations that support sport in the county. Presentation of the awards will take place on the evening of the 18th October at the Holiday Inn, Basildon with the Essex winner going on to represent the county at the East of England Regional Sports Awards in November.
In total there are seven award categories and six of these will be selected by a panel of judges. However, the Unsung Sporting Hero category will be nominated by the general and sporting public. So, if you know somebody who volunteers their time to sport within Essex, then now could be your chance, to nominate them for an award.
Nominations are being sought on behalf of people who give their time and talents to enable others to participate in their chosen sport. This may involve helping an individual, group, team or teams.
The person can be involved in sport at any level and must be aged 16 or over.
So it could be a coach or grounds person, someone who arranges all the fixtures, or washes all the kit, somebody who makes the travel arrangements, and has probably done so for some considerable time, but it is someone who has gone that extra mile.
Angela Littlewood, Director of sportessex, the organisers of the awards, is looking forward to receiving the nominations. “We have a wonderful array of sports clubs and organisations across our county, many of which wouldn’t exist without the time, effort and dedication of numerous coaches and volunteers. Not only are these people helping to produce the sports stars of the future, but they are providing an opportunity for all to access the benefits that sport can bring. Now is the chance for the public to applaud their unsung hero and I am looking forward to receiving nominations for this prestigious award.”
Nominations for the category of Unsung Sporting Hero of Essex can be made via the BBC Essex website (www.bbc.co.uk/essex) with a closing date of Friday 29th September.
