Essex launches Directory of Designers
Date: 29 March 2006
The Essex Designers Network has launched a unique “Directory of Designers” to mark its first anniversary at an event held at Hylands House last week.
The Directory, which is the first of its kind, is a resource for organisations across Essex and the East of England looking into how quality, appropriate, up-to-date design can enhance their business. It provides easy-to-access information on over 300 local designers working in the fields of architecture, engineering, fashion and textiles, branding, graphics, interior design, multimedia, website, product design, industrial, landscape and garden design and design management – making it simple for businesses to get in touch with like-minded designers who understand their specific business markets.
The Directory of Designers can be found on the Designers’ Network website www.designersnetwork.co.uk , along with detailed information for businesses on the design process, plus information regarding news, events and resources.
At the event, sponsored by the Essex Development & Regeneration Agency (ExDRA), over 40 Essex businesses heard about the importance of increasing their margins through the application of design and innovation. Speakers at the event included Matthew White, a consultant to B&Q and Jim Platts from the Institute for Manufacturing at the University of Cambridge.
Jim Platts, the man behind the company that makes all the large wind turbine blades in the UK focused on the importance of design thinking. He said, “We tend to think designers simply design things. Actually they do much more than that. They enable us to see new possibilities in things and to bring those possibilities through into practical reality.”
Sally Brazier who manages the Designers Network in Essex was delighted with the event. “It was fantastic to see so many businesses come and hear about the importance of design and innovation from two expert speakers in their field. I’m sure that those that attended found the event to be really worthwhile and will hopefully take some of what they have learnt and apply it to their own business.”
